Artist's Statement

"The significance of making art, I find more in the process than the finished result. When working with fine attention, it is possible to become absorbed in the flow of looking and responding to a point where a rigid sense of self is lost. What remains, in essence, is movement held in stillness; a bright and expansive state of mind. It is this silent presence (as I have experienced in the paintings of Vermeer, amongst others) that I try to instil in my work. I hope to allow the viewer a moment of calm, and, by choosing as my main subject the human figure, question the ultimate truth of our ever changing bodies and minds compared with the more permanent, steady and ever-accessible inner presence."
